I haven’t written a review about BRS (Black Rock Shooter) as of yet, and I feel like I really need to!
I actually kept a review over each episode whenever I saw Mawaru, for the most part, not for amusing purposes, but for the sole purpose that the series was so maddening confusing in a good way that I just had to keep track of it since the series got it’s popularity from that sole gimmick ‘confusing the viewer apeshit’. And whoever watched it clearly understands where I’m coming from when I say that you literally came back for more madness. Back to BRS, while I fell victim to the OVA, I was glue to the screen for the epic choreography of battle, I wanted more and was thrill to know they were making a series for it; which we had to wait for.  While I’m not a fan of the BRS theme song, I was hoping to see if the series was going to be subtle of the obvious ‘yuriness’ that the OVA provided.
Boy was I glad that they did! BRS is clearly the yuri with action/magical girl series of the season. Yes, Magical Girl, regardless of how dark theme BRS is, it still falls under the fantasy magical spectrum. While I enjoy a good yuri story I am enjoy the small little obvious hints of affection between BRS and Dead Master, I mean DM is all jealous and clingy with BRS, and BRS is seriously crushing her as well with heavy blushes and so forth. Of course I glee from joy with how much pain BRS endure just to set DM ‘free’, to the mere touching moments of actually calling each other by their names for the very first time, dropping the honorifics, making either blush like crazy to Mato becoming giddy just thinking about becoming closer to Yomi. That is just so fucking cute no matter how you look at it. Come out of the closet already, please.  In fact I think the fans did it a very long time ago. The best part is that they don’t even know it yet.
Sure BRS is more than that, but do I care? Not really, those small little moments of cuteness make the dark theme series more enjoyable, and the action it provides is pure gold. However the only qualms I have is well, several but I’ll live.
-          Dead Master’s outfit from the OVA is far better than the series. Including weapons.
-          The drawing of the cast seems super lazy but still similar concept from the OVA, I guess the entire budget went in the action.  With that said I think any further complaints fall really in this category.
That aside, it makes up for it greatly with those subtle overtones of yuriness. I guess that is a strong word for it, since it’s more PG rated, so I guess ‘Girls Love’ is more better. I do find it amusing that middle school girls don’t think about boys but they do think about girls now. Apparently they want to wait till they’re in HS to see boys in a romantic level. By this logic all girls are into girls in Middle School, get into boys in High School, and we jump back to girls in College cause fuck it, it was a great experience it seems.  ‘Girl Love’ aside, the plot seems to be picking up and I love the fact that the series is being consistence and staying true to the OVA, in some levels anyways, and that a lot of symbolism is at play which makes you appreciate it even more. And of course, the action itself is enough to make anyone watch it. I mean it’s just fucking amazing. With that said, I look forward to more BRS!
